 The Resilient Educator
A recent story from CNN reported that those addressing the short supply of teachers are missing the point - the real issue is keeping teachers in the classroom. The National Commission on Teaching and America's Future stated that in the face of teacher shortage some districts have lowered standards, cut training, and ignored laws in favor of stopgap hiring. These shortcuts ultimately backfire. Improving working conditions and other teacher retention strategies is where emphasis should be placed. The Commission stated that because the problem has been defined incorrectly, the solutions have not been effective. During the first three years, about one-third of teachers quit, and almost half leave within five years.
As a strategy to help our schools address teacher retention, Heart to Heart Stress Management & Personal Coaching is now able to provide The Resilient Educator Program. This program is grounded in 16 years of neuroscience and research through the Institute of HeartMath. It offers scientifically validated techniques that help educators boost performance, improve relationships, and strengthen resiliency.
A three-month study of the benefits of the Resilient Educator training in a Kentucky school district demonstrated a dramatic decrease in stress symptoms and increased job satisfaction. Content of the program includes the role of emotions in performance and health, how emotions drive brain activity into chaos or coherence, how to build and sustain resiliency, effective communication and productive working relationships.
Heart to Heart Stress Management & Personal Coaching is able to offer CE credits to teachers for this program and it caqn be delivered in a variety of ways--as a four or six hour program or broken up into one-to-two hour sessions spread out over several weeks to allow integration of new techniques. We will provide pre and post assessments to measure the effectiveness of the program. We encourage you to participate in this unique program as a strategy to address teacher retention in your district.
